There was for some time disagreement in the literature as to whether scratches made by curling rocks affect the motion of curling rocks. Recently published experimental results resolved the disagreement and showed that scratches made by curling rocks do not affect the motion of curling rocks. A more recent paper proposed a model based upon the idea that scratches cause the curl observed. We comment on this paper and present more experimental results showing that scratches do not cause the curl. These additional experiments were designed to relate to features of the proposed model and show that these features are in disagreement with experiments. We also make some comments on the model proposed in the paper we comment on.
Description of contents
- 9 Videos of curling rocks (yellow handle) rotating counter-clockwise and curling to the left. The view is of an approaching rock and therefore curls to the right of the screen in the video. There are three videos where there are 0, 2 and 10 layers of scratches made to the ice.
- 9 Videos of curling rocks (red handle) rotating clockwise and curling to the right. The view is of an approaching rock and therefore curls to the left on the screen in the video. There are three videos where there are 0, 2 and 10 layers of scratches made to the ice.
- 1 video of curling rock (red handle) rotating clockwise and curling to the right from the viewpoint of the curler. This video demonstrates a normal shot on the ice surface used.
- 1 video of curling rock (yellow handle) rotating counter-clockwise and curling to the left from the viewpoint of the curler. This video demonstrates a normal shot on the ice surface used.
- 1 video of the constructed grouping of curling rocks used to make scratches on the ice
- 1 video of the sctraching process
Before Scratches
- Rock thrown counter-clockwise and curlilng left from the point of view of the shooter (yellow handle)
- Rocks thrown clockwise and curling right from the point of view of the shooter (red handle)
Rock grouping for making scratches
After 2 scratches
- Rock thrown counter-clockwise and curlilng left from the point of view of the shooter (yellow handle)
- Rocks thrown clockwise and curling right from the point of view of the shooter (red handle)
After 10 scratches
- Rock thrown counter-clockwise and curlilng left from the point of view of the shooter (yellow handle)
- Rocks thrown clockwise and curling right from the point of view of the shooter (red handle)
Normal shots on ice surface
